Firewall for SMEs: When Is an ISP Router No Longer Enough?
Evaluate a firewall by segmentation, VPN, logging, access control and operating capacity rather than headline throughput.

An ISP router often provides basic NAT, DHCP and connectivity. When a business needs segmentation, VPN, logging, application control or governed policy changes, both the device and operating model need to mature.
A firewall does not make an organization safe by itself. Value comes from correct policies, protected administration, maintained firmware, actionable logs and recoverable configuration.
Practical guidance
Signals that a dedicated firewall is justified
Adapt to business scope, risk and operating capacity.
The business has several VLANs or branches, remote-access VPN, public services, source/destination policy, change auditing or centralized alerting. Administrative ownership must remain with the business rather than only a provider account.
A small simple office may use a simpler solution, but defaults still need changing, updates applied and internet administration disabled.
